Approach & FAQ
Gentle, practical, and on your side.
Counseling works best when you feel safe, respected and genuinely listened to. That's the heart of how we work, whoever you see.
Our principles
- 01
We start with you, not a method
Before any technique, we want to understand your story, what matters to you and what you'd like to be different.
- 02
Evidence-informed, never rigid
Our counselors draw on approaches such as CBT, ACT, emotionally focused and narrative therapy, blended to suit you.
- 03
Small steps you can keep
Between sessions, we might suggest a reflection or a small practice. Never homework you dread.
- 04
Honest about fit
If we're not the right match, we'll say so kindly and help you find someone who is.
Your first session
What the first hour usually looks like.
Most people feel a little nervous beforehand. That's completely normal, and something we're very used to.
Settling in
A cup of tea, a comfortable chair, and a few minutes to arrive. Online, we start with a quick check that the connection feels okay.
The practical bits
We explain confidentiality and its limits, fees and how sessions work, and answer any questions.
Your story, at your pace
You share what feels right. It's fine not to know where to start; your counselor will gently help.
Looking ahead
Together you agree what you would like from counseling and how often to meet. Nothing is fixed.

Book a consultationHow do I know if counseling is right for me?
You don't need to be in crisis, or even sure what's wrong. If something has been weighing on you, or you'd like to understand yourself or a relationship better, a free consultation is a low-pressure way to find out whether counseling could help.
What happens in the free 15-minute consultation?
It's a relaxed phone or video chat. You can tell us a little about what's going on, ask questions about how we work, and get a sense of whether a particular counselor feels like a good fit. There's no obligation to book.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Online sessions use a secure video platform and work well for many people. Due to licensing, our counselors can only see clients who are located in [state] at the time of the session.
How long will I need to come?
It varies. Some people come for six to eight sessions to work through something specific; others prefer longer-term support. We review together regularly and you can pause or stop whenever you choose.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with a few legal exceptions, for example if there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else’s. We explain these clearly in the first session so there are no surprises.
Do you take insurance?
[Insurance placeholder.] For out-of-network plans we can provide a superbill. Self-pay clients can request a Good Faith Estimate of costs at any time.
Can I choose my counselor?
Of course. You can request someone specific when you get in touch, or let us suggest a match based on what you're looking for and your availability.
What if I need help urgently?
We're not an emergency or crisis service. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or your local emergency number right away.
